Activists asked church head to highlight Sri Lanka abuses

Civil rights and church activists say they urged the general secretary of the World Council of Churches, the Rev. Samuel Kobia, when he visited Sri Lanka, to draw international attention to what they say is an abysmal human rights situation in the Indian Ocean island, reports Ecumenical News International.

"We want an immediate cease-fire because of the barbaric situation as a result of the war," said Wickremabahu Karunaratne, chairperson of the Committee for Investigating Disappearances, during a meeting of rights' activists, who had met Kobia during his 19-24 October visit to Sri Lanka. Kobia was leading a team as part of a WCC peace campaign, which arranges visits to conflict zones in the world.
