Christian and civic groups say Zimbabwe needs new constitution

The Save Zimbabwe Campaign, an alliance of Christian organizations, civic bodies and opposition political parties, has demanded a new constitution in the southern African country as a basis for having free and fair elections, due in March, reports Ecumenical News International.

"We demand elections under the auspices of a new, people-driven democratic constitution," the campaign said in a statement issued on 28 January. President Robert Mugabe has set 29 March as the date for presidential, parliamentary and local government elections. But the opposition says the environment is not yet conducive for free and fair elections in the southern African nation.
