Lithuanian bishops challenge liquor sponsors on basketball ads

Lithuanian bishops are refusing to waver on their support for laws restricting advertisements alcoholic beverages and in doing so are clashing with the Baltic country's media, reports Ecumenical News International. In a statement presented at a media conference on 7 January, Cardinal Audrys Juozas Backis of Vilnius and Archbishop Sigitas Tamkevicius of Kaunas, head of the Lithuanian Catholic bishops' conference, had strongly criticised business and media groups. The business and media groups, the bishops said, had "decided to encourage social destruction and instigate public hounding of politicians" due to an anticipated fall in profits triggered by new laws which put constraints on liquor advertisements.
