Greek Orthodox church leader Archbishop Christodoulos dies

Archbishop Christodoulos, who during his almost 10 years as head of the (Orthodox) Church of Greece received Pope John Paul II for an historic visit and sparked controversy with several of his remarks, died on 28 January, aged 69, reports Ecumenical News International. "He recognised the importance of the Church having a voice on issues which affect the whole of the European Continent and the importance of the Church's voice being heard within the European institutions," the general secretary of the Conference of European Churches, Archdeacon Colin Williams, said in a 28 January statement released in Geneva.
