Hungarian bishops defend right of Jesuits on hunger strike

Roman Catholic bishops in Hungary have defended a hunger-strike that was recently held by Jesuit priests in protest at inequality in social and economic conditions in the eastern European country, reports Ecumenical News International. "The general situation is getting worse here, as the gap between the haves and have-nots widens," Laszlo Nemeth, secretary-general of the Hungarian Catholic Bishops' Conference told Ecumenical News International. "Although the church didn't support this action directly, we can be happy it happened. It's positive sign that Catholic clergy have a right to a pluralism of opinions." The Jesuit priests, the Rev. Laszlo Vertesaljai and the Rev. Jozsef Hofher, on 6 January suspended their 18-day hunger strike which they said was intended as a protest against a government-backed draft law to allow private business into the health insurance system.
