Pro-Life March scheduled to shake up beach resort town in Brazil
Pro-life advocates in Brazil, continuing a resistance movement that has gained significant momentum in the country in recent months, have scheduled a demonstration in the small beach resort city of Maceió, in the state of Alagoas, reports Matthew Cullinan Hoffman, LifeSiteNews.com. The demonstration will begin at the Enseada Hotel in the neighborhood of Pajuçara beach on Sunday, January 13 at 4:00 pm.
The event, which is expected to bring together more than 2,000 people from various religious groups, is being organized by the Committee for the Defense of Life (COMVIDA), an organization that reportedly includes many people from the professional sector, including doctors, lawyers, government workers, psychologists, and journalists.
The news organization Alagoas24Horas reported that event organizer Ricardo Santos blames the movement for the legalization of abortion in Brazil on "the federal government, in chorus with some wealthy countries interested in controlling the population of poor nations...and international organizations, such as the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IBPF), that have affiliates they back in more than 180 countries, including Brazil (BENFAM)."
Of particular concern to the marchers is bill 1135/91, which is currently making its way through the National Congress. This bill, if made law, would legalize abortion through the fifth month of gestation, to preserve the "physical or mental health" of the mother, a vague standard that has resulted in abortion-on-demand in numerous other countries, such as Spain.
