Update: Second wave of flooding devastates Assam

As the people of Assam try to patch their lives back together following recent widespread flooding, another bout of inclement weather has left their villages submerged again. Many areas are completely covered in water after the Brahmaputra River swelled for a second time. More than 60,000 people are affected this time, reports Gospel for Asia.

The floods consumed nearly 100,000 acres of land, destroying large quantities of crops. The local government is currently distributing rice and dal to the thousands of families without food and water. Gospel for Asia missionaries in the area are also trying to provide relief for victims.

The flooding began a few weeks ago, originally leaving 150 villages under water. The waters also seriously damaged three Bridge of Hope centers and 40 churches where GFA missionaries serve as pastors.

Many homes were broken apart, floating away as the waters gushed by. However, the 20 homes that GFA had constructed after last year’s flooding in Assam stood strong. They were built on tall posts reinforced with concrete, which kept them above the violent, rushing water. When the flooding subsides, GFA Compassion Services teams will continue with the plan to build 30 more homes for those who have lost theirs.

GFA missionaries in Assam request prayer that many people will turn to Christ’s love during this time of devastation. They also ask for prayer that they will have the strength and energy to continue providing relief materials to the victims, while they are also suffering from the floods.
