US faith groups seek to revive ties ahead of workers' holiday

A rapid increase of Latin American immigrants in the United States has prompted churches to reclaim old links and re-focus attention on labour issues, says an activist working to revive ties between faith communities and organized labour in the country, reports Ecumenical News International.

Kim Bobo, the executive director of Interfaith Worker Justice, a Chicago-based organization, spoke recently about those ties as the United States prepared to commemorate Labour Day on 1 September. Labour Day is part of a three-day holiday weekend that has come, for most Americans, to mark the end of summer in the United States rather than a celebration of workers and the U.S. labour movement.
