Church joins Turkana County Govt in Promoting Peace

Bishop Dominic Kimengich of the Catholic Diocese of Lodwar has said that the diocese will continue working with the County government of Turkana to foster peace in the county and its environs, reports CISA.

Bishop Kimengich said that the Church signed a memorandum of understanding with the county government on service delivery and provision of basic social amenities.

“We have entered into a memorandum of understanding on service delivery on provision of basic amenities such as health services and water in the county,” Bishop Kimengich told CISA.

He noted that the Church was working on the northern part of the county, which has more insecurity problems and would continue with projects in South Sudan, Ethiopia and Uganda to ensure that peace prevails.

The bishop said that the diocese was also in the process of reaching out to “everybody on the diocese to foster peace through various projects.”

“We have come up with connector projects in the diocese for instance where two communities are fighting over water, we build them a borehole on one side so that the conflict is diminished,” Bishop Kimengich said.

He said that the diocese had been helping the children from the many communities go to school as a measure towards promoting peace.

“These young people if they do not go to school, they easily become warriors. We often encourage them to go to school. This, we believe will be a solution to the problem,” he said.

In November, a section of Turkana Mps urged the national government to declare insecurity a national disaster.

Turkana South MP James Lomenen said the government should intensify the war against insecurity for implementation of any development plans.

“The government should take charge of security. It does not matter if it is the Kenya Defense Forces, Regular Police or Administration Police who are used to contain insecurity. All we require in our places of worship, market centers, hotel, transport and social places is security,” said Lomenen.
