Press-secretary of Belorussian Orthodox Church: abolishment of death penalty
The theme of “The death penalty in Belarus: Theory and Reality” was discussed on December 11 at the round table in the Belarusian Institute of Law (Minsk). The discussion was attended by teachers and students of the institute, experts House of Representatives, the Investigative Committee, the Prosecutor General, the Belarusian Republican Bar Association, reports The Christian Telegraph in reference to krynitsa.info.
The position of the Orthodox Church on the death penalty was presented by Archpriest Serge Lepin on behalf of the Synodal Information Department of the Belarusian Exarchate. He recalled that the foundations of the Social Concept of the Russian Orthodox Church argues that the death penalty cannot be used as correctional prevention, and this a irreparable judicial mistake and provokes mixed feelings among the people. According to him, mercy to fallen man is always more preferable than revenge, and the Church welcomes the steps taken by public authorities to abolish the death penalty, according to church.by.
However, the Church recognizes that there is still the question whether or not the abolition of the death penalty should be made by society freely, taking into account the state of crime in it, law enforcement, judicial systems and security reasons of citizens.
