RWANDA: Pope Names New Bishop of Gikongoro

Pope Francis has named Bishop Celestin Hazikimana as the new bishop for the Catholic diocese of Gikongoro in Southern Rwanda, the country’s press agency reported, reports CISA.

Bishop Hazikimana replaces the late His Eminence Augustin Misago who died in 2012.

Gikongoro’s new bishop was born in Kigali on August 14 1963.

Prior to his appointment, Bishop Hazikimana served as the Secretary General of the Rwanda Episcopal Conference.

Bishop Hazikimana was appointed priest on 21 July 1991.

After serving in several ministries in Rwanda, he continued his training in Napoli (Italy) where he earned a Doctorate in Dogmatic Theology.

Since the passing on 12 March 2012 of His Eminence Augustin Misago, Gikongoro’s diocese had been led by the Bishop of Butare.
