Faith-based organizations caution Malawi in linking with China

A network of faith-based organizations and civil-society organizations has urged Malawi's government to exercise caution in a bid to cut long-standing diplomatic ties with Taiwan in favour of its rival, China, citing Beijing's human rights record, reports Ecumenical News International. The Civic and Political Space Platform said in a 31 December statement there are many issues the Malawi government must consider in international relations, such as materialistic and nationalistic ideologies, that contradict human values. It said Malawi would do well to remain with Taiwan rather than establishing diplomatic ties with China.
