The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (Ukraine's parliament) appointed Alexander Turchynov, the first deputy head of the party “Batkivschina” and Baptist preacher, as Acting President, reports the Christian Telegraph invictory.com.
Eugeniy Bahmutskiy, the first deputy chairman of the Russian Union of Evangelical Christians-Baptists welcomed the election of Turchinov. “God works in a special way in Ukraine. The baptist will bring God's shalom! Praying for him,” he wrote on his Facebook page.
As LigaBusinessInform reports, 285 deputies voted for the adoption of decree N4204. According to the document, Turchynov will perform the duties of President of Ukraine till a new head of state is elected.
The Parliament voted for the appointment of Turchinov to be the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada on February 22nd. After the election as Speaker, Turchinov said he is ready to resign when a new parliamentary majority is formed and offers in accordance with the Constitution of Ukraine, a new candidate for the post of Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada.
Earlier, the Parliament stripped Viktor Yanukovych of his presidential powers and called early elections on May 25th this year.
In his address to the Ukrainians, Turchynov talked about the priorities, which the new government is facing. “Our first tasks today – to stop the confrontation, to regain control, handle ability and order in the country, take Special Forces and internal forces to all the places of permanent deployment, ensure peace and tranquility, prevent new victims, local rivalries and lynching. We should give firm resistance to any manifestations of separatism and encroachments on the territorial integrity of Ukraine,” said the appeal, reports LigaBusinessInform.
Another priority, which the Acting President talked about, was the return to the course of European integration. “We must return to the European family. We recognize the importance of relations with the Russian Federation, and are ready for dialogue with the Russian leadership to build relations with this country on a new, truly equitable and good-neighborly basis, which implies recognition of accounting Ukraine's European choice,” said Turchinov.
Besides that, the Verkhovna Rada appointed Acting Minister of Internal Affairs and the appointed authorities of General Prosecutor of Ukraine, Ministry of Defense, and Security Services.
The commissioner Minister of Internal Affairs announced that Viktor Yanukovych was declared internationally wanted.
Recall that, about 100 people were killed according to official data since the beginning of last week in Kiev. The vast majority of them – protesters, were shot by snipers. There are also reports that demonstrators opened fire on law enforcement officers.
In the recent months, the opposition rallied in support of the European integration, which the government decided to postpone despite the long-term preparation, which has continued in Ukraine. In many cities, including Kiev, “evromaidans” were organized. People are not going to leave Maidan until their demands are fulfilled.
