Coke, “America the Beautiful,” and the language of diversity

According to Pew Research Center, an ad for Coca-Cola that ran during the Super Bowl sought to portray ethnic diversity in the U.S. by featuring "America the Beautiful" sung in several languages. The many different kinds of people in the ad – including Hispanics, Muslims, Jews and Asians – were united by their identity as "American." A Fact Tank post quantifies the linguistic diversity of the U.S.: 21% of Americans ages 5 and older speak a language other than English at home.
