Christians of Iraq are calling for help from Western Christians
The Chaldean Archibishop of Kirkuk, Lewis Sako, has asked western Christians to help the Christians of Iraq, Christian Telegraph reports. “The West should welcome Iraqi Christians but at the same time it should influence the authorities in Bagdad so that Christians who would like to stay in the country can stay there and be safe,” he said.
“Iraqi Christians are a treasure of the Universal Church. We can’t forget about them, we can’t leave them face-to-face with the complete Islamization being carried out by the extremists. Western Christians should understand how serious the tragedy of Iraqi Christians is, as most of them have suffered for their faith.”
The Archibishop also reiterated that 30 years ago, 5% of Iraq's population was Christian, while today the proportion is less than 3%.
“Churches in the West could really help us to stay in our country. They could help us open schools and professional institutes, form medical staff, accomplish small agricultural projects and create economical and sanitary structures. Such projects would create many jobs and would renew our hope of remaining in our homeland.”
