International religious history conference held in Ukraine
On May 13 in Lviv, scholars from Ukraine, Lithuania, Belarus, Poland, Slovakia, America and Bulgaria kicked off the 18th International “History of Religions in Ukraine” Conference, reports RISU. According to a history Professor Yaroslav Dashkevych, this event is the only annual scholarly conference on religious subjects in Ukraine.
The thLree-day conference will touch on various aspects of Orthodoxy, Roman Catholicism, Protestantism, and Eastern religions, as well as the pre-Christian age. Perhaps most importantly, the conference will also address the protection of sacral monuments.
Deputy Head of the Lviv Regional State Administration, Taras Batenko, noted at the opening ceremonies: “This conference is timely not only in spiritual circles but also for authorities. Confessional issues, Church preservation, spirituality and sacral monuments will be discussed. Today, Church fires are much more frequent than in Soviet times, when only two ancient wooden Churches burnt in the Lviv Region. It is important to decide whether these buildings should be raised to the status of museums as monuments of sacral culture or if they should be left in the hands of communities.”
