Canada's 'West Coast' March for Life has over 1000 participate
The first, annual West Coast March for Life was held Thursday in Victoria BC with over 1,000 participants. Organizers from Pro Life BC, the Knights of Columbus and Campaign Life Coalition BC agreed that the event was a resounding success, reports Natalie Hudson, LifeSiteNews.com. The day began in brilliant sunshine. The huge crowd gathered on the steps of Centennial square with signs provided by the Knights of Columbus and Pro life BC that read "Women need support not abortion" and "We regret our abortion." Led by police escort, the crowd moved through the streets of Victoria, stopping traffic and awing bystanders.
A rally was held at the Legislature following the March. Heather Stilwell, well known Surrey School Board Trustee opened with a rousing speech. Other speakers included Dan O'Hara, State Deputy for the Knights of Columbus, Bishop Gagnon of the Diocese of Victoria, Rev. Dean Henderson, Sarah Hudson, Western Director of National Campus Life Network, Natalie Hudson, Director of Education for Pro Life BC, and Colleen Roy of Coquitlam Pro Life. Senator Gerry St. Germain was scheduled to speak, but due to a conflicting event was unable to be present. His speech was read by Annette Turgeon from the Diocese of Victoria. Students from Redeemer Pacific College and Trinity Western University provided musical entertainment for the crowd.
One glaring absence was felt; the total lack of secular media. Not one person from any news, television or print media was present to capture the event. It should have garnered some attention, given the size of the crowd and the fact that this rally was not about the usual social issues of big business and the environment. Just another example of blatant of media bias.
John Hof, President of Campaign Life Coalition BC downplayed the lack of media coverage telling LifeSiteNews.com, that while the numbers were great for a first effort, "we've got to get serious numbers out and then we'll be covered. Everyone should bring ten of their friends for next year's March and with 100,000 at the legislature it'll be hard for the media to ignore."
