Church group lauds Malawi government for shunning trade deal

The Centre for Social Concern, a Roman Catholic group in the central African country of Malawi, has commended its government for refusing to sign a trade deal with the European Union called a European Partnership Agreement, reports Ecumenical News International. "It is with great gratitude that we learn that the State President will not let Malawi sign the EPA because they are not beneficial to the development of the country," the centre said in a statement. It asserted that the agreement would lead to manufacturers in Malawi losing out as the local market would be choked by cheap imports.
