Japanese group calls for retrial of Catholic ex-boxer on death row

A Christian-led group has criticised Japan's Supreme Court for rejecting the latest appeal for the retrial of an ex-boxer, Paul Iwao Hakamada, who is on death row, convicted of murdering a family of four, and who converted to Roman Catholicism while in prison, reports Ecumenical News International. "This is an inhumane decision. I hope to ask the Pope for his support through the [Japanese] Cardinal (Seiichi Shirayanagi)," Sachie Monma, a Catholic and representative of the Society to Save Iwao Hakamada, told Ecumenical News International. "The court is brain dead," Monma said.
