Filipino church leaders pray and pay tribute to ailing Aquino

Church leaders in the Philippines are paying tribute to the historical role of ailing former president Corazon Aquino in helping to restore democracy in their country in the 1980s after nearly 20 years of martial law rule under Ferdinand Marcos, reports Ecumenical News International. "Cory [Corazon] was a brave woman who dared to serve as president after the prolonged onerous rule of Marcos," Roman Catholic Bishop Carlito Cenzon told Ecumenical News International. "She tried to restore the mechanics of democracy, [although still] surrounded by Marcos' cronies," he said, adding that he would personally pray for Aquino's healing.
