Belarus government refused to modificate state religious law

On March 26, 2008 House of Representatives of National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus answer to the communal citizens appeal was received which was signed by the Presiding Commissioner of human rights, national relationships and mass media Yuri Kulakovski, reports New Life church press-center.

It follows from the answer that the Committee consulted with Ministry of Justice and authorized agent for religion and nationalities Leonid Gulyako.

The letter mentions that arguments of believers’ pursuit described in the communal appeal are in contrary to fact, and the Law «On freedom of conscience and religious organizations» contrariwise «complies with the Constitution and international legal acts at large».

Yuri Kulakovski confirmed that it was House of Representatives Deputy’ responsibility to initiate legislative proposal as well as to make applicable legislation modifications. However it is «rather Deputy’s right than a duty». Presiding commissioner took the privilege to refuse 50 000 citizens of law modifications introduction.

It is already the fifth (including the Constitutional Court reply received earlier) superior body of power denial in answer to the communal citizens appeal with request to initiate religious legislation modification introduction in Belarus.
