Jaerock Lee's blog: My Parents’ Strict Focus on Education
Being the youngest, I tended to be on the obedient side, so I was loved in a special way by my parents. My parents were very strict about education and discipline in all courses of life. They taught my siblings and me not only the basics of human relationships, but also common etiquette and courtesy, the proper ways of walking, speaking, dressing, eating at the table, holding the spoon, sleeping, and waking up. They also emphasized that when we speak, we shouldn’t raise our voice; that we should not begin to speak until the other person has finished talking; that we should not look directly into the eyes of seniors when they are talking to us; that we should not disrupt our neighbors when visiting; and no matter how poor we may be, if visited by a beggar, not to let him go empty- handed, etc. They also taught us to act out of goodness and patience. I think because my parents educated me in this way, even before I knew God, I was able to be led by my conscience and people used to refer to me as the ‘man who doesn’t need the law.’ After I accepted the Lord, I think it was thanks to my parents’ strict education methods that I was easily able to say “Amen” and act accordingly, to any command that came from God’s word.
As a scholar of classical Chinese, my father studied physiognomy, which is judging character by physical features, and palm-reading. He used to correctly foretell important events that would occur in the nation, and various things that would happen in the village. He’d tell me, “Jaerock, you are going to become a great man. Everything looks good, but your life line is a bit short and severed in the middle, so you are fated to die early. But, there is a fairly thin connecting line next to your life line, so if you just make it past thrity, you will become a blessing to many people.”
My father was very happy after reading my physiognomy and palms. He said I could die at a young age, but if I just make it past thrity, I would be traveling to many parts of the world and earn the respect of many people. When I was thrity, I was steeped in illness. I found myself at the doorstep of death on many occasions. Many times, I didn’t even know if I would survive until the next day. Living in such a condition, I couldn’t even dream about becoming a great man someday. My father had pity on me because he thought I might die early, so he tried his very best to teach me and provide me with good things. My mother also lived a very diligent and faithful life for me, and the entire family.
