Supreme Court of Belarus gave negative answer to the church

Second negative answer to the collective appeal of citizens came from the highest organs of government to the address of New Life church on March, 22nd, reports New Life church press-center.

We remind that the appeal was sent on March, 7th, to the 5 instances which possess the right of legislative initiative after the refusal of Constitutional Court to consider the appeal of more than 50,000 citizens of Belarus about bringing changes into the religious legislation of the country.

Answer states that Supreme Court also has no foundations to turn to the Constitutional Court because «Supreme Court can question the un-constitutionality of only those statutory acts that were used by the courts in solving specific cases».

This contradictory statement was commented by lawyer of the New Life church Sergey Lukanin:

«The answer show either ignorance of the Supreme Court or incompetence of specific officials that were putting this letter together. We know that the Law «On Freedom of Conscience and Religious Organizations» was repeatedly used by the courts in solving administrative cases with verdicts being drawn where tens and hundreds of believers were fined for violation of this law».
