US-based head of Russian church offshoot dies, praised by Putin

Metropolitan Laurus, who helped heal an 80-year rift between the Russian Orthodox Church and an offshoot named the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, has died, reports Ecumenical News International. He was 80. The head of the church outside Russia, Laurus was found dead on 16 March in his residence at the Holy Trinity Monastery in rural Jordanville, New York state, about 100 kilometres northwest of Albany, the Synod of Bishops in Moscow said. He had been ill only a few days, according to church reports.
