Belarus doesn’t see any grounds to change religious legislation

The Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus doesn’t see grounds to appeal to the Constitutional Court of the country to determine the accordance of the Law «On freedom of conscience and religious organizations» with Belarusian Constitution and international legal norms, reports New Life church press centre.

The Council of the Republic has claimed this in the official letter as a response to the Appeal of participants of the Campaign «Protecting the rights of freedom of conscience». As it was noted in the letter, in 2002 the Council of the Republic had already approved and recognized the accordance of the religious legislation with the Constitution and didn’t intend to reconsider its decision.

«This letter from the Council of the Republic is the first response we’ve received to our appeal to the high state authorities and to the Administration of the President after the Constitutional Court had refused to consider the petition of more than 50 000 citizens of the country. As we see from this response, there were not added any more reasons for optimism. One of the instances authorized to bring suggestions to the Constitutional Court on the grounds of citizens’ appeal has refused to do it. Soon we will see whether 50 000 citizens of the country can hope on consideration of the issue they raised by the Constitutional Court», - said Sergey Lukanin, the coordinator of the Campaign «Protecting the rights of freedom of conscience».
