Rwandan priest's jail term for genocide upped to life

Rwandan Roman Catholic priest Athanase Seromba has had a sentence increased to life in prison for aiding and abetting crimes against humanity during mass killings in the eastern African country in 1994. In handing down its verdict on 12 March, the appeals' court of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda in Arusha, Tanzania, increased the term of 15 years imprisonment to which Seromba had been sentenced in 2006, reports Ecumenical News International. "Having taken into consideration the extraordinary gravity of the crimes as well as the mitigating and aggravating circumstances, the appeals chamber imposes a sentence of imprisonment for the remainder of Athanase Seromba's life," presiding judge Mohammed Shahabudden said.
