Cost of fixing Delhi for Commonwealth Games worries churches
Indian church leaders say the billions of dollars being spent on sprucing up the capital city, New Delhi, for the Commonwealth Games in October is wasteful, reports Ecumenical News International.
"There is a whole lot of public money that could have been used for the welfare of the poor that is being wasted on Delhi's streets," John Dayal, Delhi-based secretary general of the All India Christian Council, told ENInews.
"The politicians and officials have once again proved that the welfare of the poor is not a major priority for them," noted Dayal, a member of the National Integration Council chaired by the Indian Prime Minister.
India's leading English daily newspaper, The Times of India, released the results of a survey on 1 September that said that 76 percent of the people of Delhi feel that the Commonwealth Games expense is "unjustified", while many more are worried about their tax liability for the prodigious spending. The games take place every four years.
