5 years after Katrina, US mourns dead, survivors remember

Faith groups are joining survivors in marking the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, considered the costliest natural disaster in the history of the United States, reports Ecumenical News International.

The hurricane, which struck the U.S. coast on 29 August 2005, caused US$81 million damage and killed 1836 persons. It destroyed large sections of the city of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast region of several U.S. states. It also prompted wide condemnation of the initial response by the U.S. government, which critics said was shockingly inadequate.
