Study: Nigerian doctors unwilling to commit abortions

A new study has found that only 13.4% of doctors in Nigeria would be willing to do abortions, if Nigerian abortion law were liberalized, reports LifeSiteNews.com.

Abortion is currently illegal in Nigeria except to save the life of the mother.

Furthermore, doctors did not consider the liberalization of Nigerian abortion law to be a very effective strategy in reducing abortion-related maternal deaths.

They instead viewed abstinence from pre-marital sex and contraceptive use as the most effective strategy for reducing abortion-related deaths.

Physicians were equally divided, however, on whether the liberalization of abortion would significantly reduce maternal mortality in Nigeria.

Previous studies have found that a third of Nigerian lawmakers opposed abortion under any circumstances.

A 2003 study found that the majority of Nigerian respondents opposed the liberalization of abortion laws over fears it would increase promiscuity, sexually transmitted diseases, and abortion rates.
