Hong Kong Christians 'not interested' in social awareness

Hong Kong Christians have a low level of social awareness, shows a survey in which human rights and democratic progress were found to be at the bottom of the churches' priorities, reports Ecumenical News International.

Among 1142 Chinese-language churches in Hong Kong only 20.6 percent ran formation programmes on social concerns from 2007 to 2009, according to a survey carried out in March by the Church Renewal Movement. Social concerns placed third last among the 20 formation themes, ahead of soul healing (11.2 percent) and church planting (2.1 percent).

"There has been much less discussion on democratic development among the churches over the past few years," said the Rev Wu Chi Wai, general secretary of the Hong Kong Church Renewal Movement that conducted the survey. "It's an unhealthy phenomenon."
